Hagerty Hooks 'em Early

Hagerty Drive

?

Automotive interest among teens is at an all-time low: the Department of Transportation indicates that only 49 percent of 17 year-olds have a driver's license. That number is down more than 25 percent since 1978, and new cars with manual transmissions now account for less than 10 percent of the total take.

?

Hagerty Insurance is determined to keep the art of driving-- and more specifically, driving vintage cars-- alive by holding workshops for young people who may otherwise spend their spare time and money on the latest shoot 'em up video game.?

?

The Hagerty Driving Experience exposes 15 to 25 year-olds to the charms and peculiarities of classic cars, and?their latest gathering was held at the Simeone Automotive Museum in Philadelphia-- which is, incidentally, a hidden gem chock full of historic vehicles. Participants attend classroom sessions before being taught how to drive a manual transmission on a closed course using a 1930 Ford Model A, 1966 Ford Mustang, 1974 Karmann Ghia, and 1960 Austin Healy Sprite.

?

In this age of new cars that are exponentially better, faster, easier... and potentially more soulless than ever, it's refreshing to see a revival in classic rides. Let's hope more kids ditch their Playstations in favor of the real world, and the real road.
