Is there an expiry date to calling our partners ?Boyfriend? or ?Girlfriend? once we reach a certain age? I?ve been in a relationship for eight years with the same man and last year we welcomed our first offspring (a baby boy who we are rather fond of).

In between getting together and spawning a child there hasn?t been any wedding bells. I am completely aware we bought a one way ticket straight to hell for having our child out of wedlock but we are both ok with this.

Marriage has never been part of our plans? we have discussed it a few times but never felt the need to actually tie the knot. We are rather content in our ringless relationship. For the last eight years we have proudly called each other ?Boyfriend? and ?Girlfriend? and this has worked brilliantly for us.

I never gave it a second thought? until I turned 30 and became a mum.? Now that I am all grown up and real mature, calling Sam* my ?boyfriend? doesn?t seem to fit anymore . (*I will refer to my boyfriend as Sam?because that is his actual name.)

Because we are raising a child together it seems like we need a title that makes our relationship sound a little more solid.? Boyfriend gives the feeling that at any moment his best mate might tell me I?m dropped and ask me to return his Green Day CD.

The worst part is getting the pity look from people when I introduce Sam as my boyfriend. The ?Oh you poor bitch, he?s knocked you up and won?t marry you? look.

We have started to flirt with some other names hoping one will begin to feel right.

?Partner?
The obvious choice for most couples living in sin but it feels very formal to me. Almost like we are running a business together. Partner can also refer to a same sex relationship. Don?t get me wrong, I have no problem with people assuming I?m a lesbian, but it?s not ideal for Sam?s masculinity.

?Baby Daddy?
Technically this is what Sam is. He is the daddy of my baby. However I am far too white to say ?baby daddy? and be taken seriously.

?Life Partner?
I may have just done a little vom in my mouth after typing that. This title is intense and makes me feel uncomfortable. Even a tad claustrophobic. Not even a slight possibility.

stk127406rke 290x385 Monty Dimond: Marriage has never been part of our plans

Romantic, no?

??The Ball and Chain?

How endearing! If Sam ever decided to call me his ?ball and chain? I would promptly chain his balls up and head for the hills.

?De facto?
This feels even more formal and business like than Partner. You can?t roll over in bed, gaze tenderly into ones eyes and whisper ?I love you my de facto?. The romantic music would screech to a violent halt. It simply doesn?t flow.

?My Better Half?
Said with an English accent this is very sweet, loving and romantic. Said with an Aussie occa accent it is boganic and sarcastic. Unfortunatly Sam and I don?t sound like Hugh Grant so we would tip the bogan scale using this title.

None of these titles excite me. We could always just lie and pretend to be husband and wife, but that seems a little deceiving. Maybe we just have to proudly rock the Boyfriend/Girlfriend label? Suck up the pity looks and embrace the fact that we sound like we are 16. ?After all, when we are 80 walking hand in hand down the street I don?t think it will bother us one bit that we feel like teenagers.

Over to you. What title or label do you and your partner rock?

Microsoft Surface with Windows RT

The Microsoft Surface with Windows RT ($699 as tested) is Microsoft's first entry into the wild world of tablets. Priced to compete with the Apple iPad , the Surface tablet with 64GB of storage comes with a 10.6-inch, five-point multi-touch screen. As is, it's aimed at users that want to do more than simply consuming media and websites, with innovative keyboard covers that make some of the more expensive Windows 8 tablets' docking solutions look absolutely clunky by comparison. Plus, it has an ace in the hole that makes it feel like a "real computer": The Surface comes with a full copy of Microsoft Office 2013 (Home and Student Edition). The Surface has the same user interface as upcoming Windows 8 laptops and tablets, thanks to Microsoft's Windows RT operating system. However, since the tablet uses Windows RT and a more economical ARM processor, the Surface isn't compatible with the majority of existing software made for Windows 7 and XP. This is the conundrum we find ourselves in while we look at Microsoft's first true computing device.

Design and Features
The Surface certainly looks like the prototypical "Post-PC" device: Its tapered and squared off sides make it look more like a prop from the Avengers than one of the rounded tablets on the market right now. The Surface measures roughly 7 by 11 by 0.37 inches (HWD), making it smaller than the Apple MacBook Air 11-inch , but a smidge longer than the current Apple iPad. Our review unit is the $699 top-of-the-line version from Microsoft, which includes a Surface Touch Cover. The Touch Cover resembles an Apple iPad Smart Cover, in that it protects the screen, and also puts it to sleep and wakes its up by closing and opening the cover. It's made of a synthetic material that protects the screen from fingerprints and even small amounts of liquid. The big difference lies in the pressure-sensitive film keyboard on the inside of the Touch Cover. It will make you forget that clunky keyboard on the Atari 400 ever happened. The Touch Cover keyboard is one of the most responsive ones we've ever used and when installed, turns the Surface into the quasi-laptop. (The Type cover is a little thicker, but uses real keyboard keys for more tactile feel when you type.)

The Touch Cover and Type Cover both latch on the bottom of the Surface with a proprietary magnetic latching mechanism. The latch is both simpler and more intuitive than the latches we've seen on other convertible tablets like the one on the HP ElitePad 900 and Asus Transformer Pad Infinity TF700 . If you hold the bottom of the Surface about a half-inch from the magnetic latch on either cover, the built-in magnets complete the job automatically with a satisfying click. Like in Microsoft's videos, you can hold the Surface by the cover while letting the tablet portion swing in midair, and the latch won't come free. Though the magnetic latch is strong, it takes virtually no effort to remove the cover with a free hand. There's just enough force resisting the act of detaching the cover to make sure you know you really want to detach the cover and are not just tugging on it. This means you can pull the Surface across a table by its cover and still not have it detach, but then pick the combo up and remove the cover quickly with a quicker tug.

The cover is supplemented by a metal kickstand that spans the back of the Surface. It folds out easel-style, and props the Surface up at a comfortable angle. You can also use the kickstand when you don't have the cover installed, like on the $499 Surface base model. Unfortunately, the kickstand's angle is not adjustable. The Surface leans back at about 22 degrees from vertical (about 68 degrees from horizontal), which is fine for use while you're seated.

The kickstand swings out easily, but Microsoft molded a finger catch only into the left-hand side of the Surface to help pull out the kickstand. If you try to open the kickstand with your right hand, it will be more difficult as the kickstand rests flush on the back of the tablet. Under the kickstand is a microSDXC card reader, capable of doubling the internal 64GB of storage. The base and midpriced Surface tablets come with 32GB of storage, so you'll have to use the micro SD card slot sooner or later on those models.

The 720p HD front-facing camera is angled straight out, but the back panel camera (also 720p) is angled up 22 degrees to offset the angling caused by the kickstand. That way, you can capture whatever is behind the Surface when it is propped on a table or other horizontal surface. The angled camera lens also means that you'll have to tilt the tablet a bit if you want to take a handheld picture with the Surface.

The Surface improves on the iPad (and most Android tablets) by having more I/O ports. A full sized laptop will of course have more ports, but the Surface comes with a full-sized USB 2.0 port, a headphone jack, and a micro HDMI port. Microsoft calls it a "Micro HD" port and sells a Micro HD-to-HDMI port adapter ($39.99 list), as well as a Micro HD-to-VGA adapter ($39.99 list). However, when we hooked up an off the shelf micro-HDMI-to-HDMI cable to the Surface, we were able to hook up to and use a HDMI monitor without any issues. The Surface supports extending Windows RT to the external screen, as well as mirroring the tablet's screen on the external display. This means you can use the Surface in a dual-monitor configuration, just like a desktop or laptop. The USB 2.0 port lets you use external peripherals like scanners, printers, keyboards, mice, and external hard drives. Speaking of mice, we were able to pair the Surface to a Microsoft Wedge Touch mouse and use it. The mouse automatically connected itself via Bluetooth after we woke the Surface from a sleep state or when we turned the mouse itself off then on again.

Apple posts rare earnings miss

Apple earnings are out, with Gene Munster, Piper Jaffray; David Pearl, Epoch Investment Partners; Daniel Morgan, Synovus Trust; Shaw Wu, Sterne Agee; and CNBC's Jon Fortt.

By CNBC.com and wire services

Fresh off its much-anticipated iPad mini reveal,?Apple?reported quarterly earnings that missed Wall Street's forecasts on Thursday and an outlook that fell shy of estimates.

Apple shares ended the regular trading day down 1.2 percent and were halted after-hours. After shares resumed trading, they fell more than 2 percent.?(Click here to get the latest quotes for Apple.)

Net income in the fiscal fourth quarter rose to $8.2 billion, or $8.67 per share, from $6.6 billion, or $7.05 per share, a year ago.

Revenue increased 27 percent to $35.97 billion from $28.27 billion a year ago.

Analysts had expected the company to report earnings excluding items of $8.75 a share on $35.8 billion in revenue, according to a consensus estimate from Thomson Reuters.

For the fiscal first quarter, Apple said it expects earnings of $11.75 a share on $52 billion in revenue. Analysts currently expect earnings of $15.43 per share and $55 billion in revenue.

"Relative to our numbers, they were kind of in line," said Shannon Cross, an analyst at Cross Research. "What people are going to focus on is that iPad was a bit weak and iPhone was solid during the quarter. The big question comes from the guidance.''

During the quarter, the company said it sold 26.9 million iPhones, 14 million iPads and 4.9 million Mac computers.

In the earnings release, the company announced that its board of directors has declared a cash dividend of $2.65 per share of common stock.

"The dividend is payable on November 15, 2012, to shareholders of record as of the close of business on November 12, 2012," the company's release said.

Shortly before the end of Apple's fourth quarter, the company launched the?iPhone 5, the latest version of its popular smartphone. Apple only had nine selling days of the new iPhone 5 in its fiscal fourth quarter, which means that all eyes are now on the current holiday quarter.

Since the iPhone 5's release in stores, the company's shares have slipped more than 13 percent from their $705 all-time high. Following the earnings release, the company's shares briefly fell below $600 for the first time since July 30.

The release comes two days after the company introduced the?iPad mini?and an update of its popular full-sized iPad. It said it has sold more than 100 million iPads since the devices debuted in April 2010.

Information from the Associated Press was included in this report.

Sandoval homers 3 times in Game 1

Looking for his record-tying fourth home run, Pablo Sandoval singled in the seventh inning as the Giants tacked on more runs. Three homers and a single tonight, not bad for a guy who was benched while slumping through the 2010 postseason.

___

Demoted closer Jose Valverde came on in relief for the Tigers, trying to find his form ? and his confidence ? in a low-leverage situation. It didn't work. Angel Pagan's double and Marco Scutaro's RBI single made it 7-1 Giants. Sandoval singled and Buster Posey added a run-scoring single to make it 8-1.

That's it for Valverde. He's out of the game. Hard to imagine manager Jim Leyland will turn to him the next time the Tigers have a save situation.

___

Tim Lincecum struck out his first three batters in relief of Barry Zito and then got a groundout to end the seventh inning. San Francisco is six outs from winning Game 1.

FOX showed a graphic that said Lincecum's outing marked the first time one Cy Young Award winner relieved another in the World Series since Baltimore's Jim Palmer came in for Mike Flanagan in 1983 against the Philadelphia Phillies.

___

Miguel Cabrera plops an RBI single into center field in the sixth and the Tigers are on the board. Austin Jackson scores after a leadoff double.

Barry Zito gets help from left fielder Gregor Blanco, who makes his second diving catch of the night ? almost in the same spot ? to rob Prince Fielder of a hit. The first grab came against Cabrera.

Zito is pulled after a single by Delmon Young, but Tim Lincecum comes on to strike out Jhonny Peralta and end the inning with the Giants ahead 6-1.

___

What a power display by Pablo Sandoval!

He just hit his third home run in Game 1 of the World Series, giving the Giants a 6-0 lead against the Detroit Tigers.

Sandoval became the fourth player to hit three home runs in a World Series game. Albert Pujols did it for St. Louis in Game 3 last year, Reggie Jackson for the New York Yankees in Game 6 in 1977, and Babe Ruth accomplished the feat twice with the Yankees ? in 1926 and 1928.

Sandoval connected twice off Justin Verlander and once off reliever Al Alburquerque.

___

Justin Verlander is done after four innings and 98 pitches. He was lifted for a pinch hitter in the top of the fifth with the Tigers trailing the Giants 5-0.

Verlander threw 66 of those pitches in his final two innings. The Giants really put some tough at-bats on him and made him work hard.

Pablo Sandoval became the fifth player to hit two homers in a game off Verlander, according to STATS LLC.

___

Unbelievable. Opposing pitcher Barry Zito slaps an RBI single to left field off Verlander with two outs in the fourth inning to give the Giants a 5-0 cushion.

Delmon Young's attempted throw to the plate hit the ground before it even reached the infield.

Wonder what kind of odds you could have gotten in Vegas on Verlander giving up a run-scoring hit to a pitcher?

Zito had a nice bunt single for an RBI in his previous start, Game 5 of the NLCS in St. Louis. Giants pitchers have an RBI in four straight postseason games.

___

Young fails to run on a tapper right in front of the plate, so Giants catcher Buster Posey quickly tags him and throws to second for an easy double play in the fourth. Prince Fielder had opened the inning with a single.

Giants starter Barry Zito has thrown four scoreless innings, outpitching Justin Verlander to this point with San Francisco jumping out to a 5-0 lead.

The Giants look sharp, the Tigers don't. Remember, the Tigers had five days off after sweeping the New York Yankees in the ALCS.

___

The Giants are getting the good bounces so far. Angel Pagan hit a chopper toward third base that hit the corner of the bag and kicked into shallow left field for a two-out double in the third inning.

Red-hot Marco Scutaro follows with an RBI single to center on a 3-2 curveball and Pablo Sandoval hits his second homer of the game to make it 4-0 Giants.

___

Both of Sandoval's homers came on 95 mph fastballs from Justin Verlander. The second one was an outer-half fastball that Sandoval sent to the opposite field and over the left-field fence.

FOX shows Verlander mouthing "Wow" as the ball cleared the wall. Verlander had allowed a total of two runs in his first three postseason starts this year before giving up four runs in the first three innings tonight.

___

Nobody can get Scutaro out lately. The NLCS MVP batted .500 against the Cardinals, tying an LCS record with 14 hits. Big hit already tonight, too.

___

FOX shows zany Barry Zito talking to himself in the dugout after he struck out against Verlander.

It was kind of fun watching Zito try to hit against a guy with such nasty stuff. Zito watched a two-strike curveball break low before swinging over the top of an off-speed pitch for strike three.

The Giants have won Zito's last 13 starts, the longest active streak in baseball.

___

That's why Gregor Blanco is out there.

The defensive whiz just made a diving catch in left field to rob Miguel Cabrera of a hit with a runner on in the third inning. Cabrera put a good swing on the ball, just didn't get it up in the air. Hard line drive. Good fortune for Giants starter Barry Zito.

Blanco made a spectacular catch in right-center to save Matt Cain's perfect game in June. He's an outstanding defender in the outfield, and we just saw why he starts for San Francisco.

___

So far, Zito has the Tigers off stride a bit. He's been able to get inside on the right-handers and he's using all his pitches. Getting groundballs and keeping the ball off the barrel of the bat.

Justin Verlander threw a nasty curve to get Buster Posey on a called third strike to end the first inning. Then he got Hunter Pence to wave at a slider for strike three to start the second. The reigning AL MVP and Cy Young Award winner appears to be settling in, finding his breaking ball.

This is the fourth time that Cy Young winners have squared off in Game 1 of the World Series. Zito won his AL Cy Young Award with Oakland 10 years ago. The guys on FOX said that's the longest gap for a pitcher between winning the Cy Young and making his first World Series start.

___

It's the All-Star game revisited! Pablo Sandoval hit a bases-loaded triple off Verlander in the first inning of the All-Star game in Kansas City back in July.

Now, Sandoval has a World Series homer off the Tigers' ace.

Verlander struggled through a five-run first inning in the All-Star game, throwing 35 pitches. The National League won 8-0, giving the Giants home-field advantage in this World Series.

Turns out, Verlander has a nemesis.

___

Sandoval's homer was the first all season off Verlander on an 0-2 pitch, FOX says.

The Giants ranked last in the majors this year with 103 home runs.

___

Pablo Sandoval hits a solo homer to center off Justin Verlander on an 0-2 pitch with two outs in the bottom of the first inning. Giants lead 1-0.

High fastball, 95 mph. Wow! Amazing that he was able to get on top of that pitch. Quick hands. Very talented hitter.

Barry Zito's average fastball velocity ranks among the slowest in the majors, and he's not throwing any harder to start the World Series. The veteran lefty was hitting 84-85 mph on the radar gun, but he hit his spots when he needed to in the first inning.

Omar Infante singled with one out and Zito walked Triple Crown winner Miguel Cabrera on a close 3-2 pitch. With two runners on, Prince Fielder popped out on a tough pitch down and away, and ALCS MVP Delmon Young grounded into a force play on a down-and-in breaking ball.

Clutch pitching by Zito against the dangerous middle of the Detroit lineup. You don't want to fall behind early against Verlander.

Verlander's first three pitches were 94 mph fastballs. He looks as though he's trying to settle himself down a bit and calm his emotions as he fiddles with his glove and the rubber.

___

Here we go! All set for baseball's 108th World Series.

Game 1 is tonight in San Francisco, with the NL champion Giants hosting Justin Verlander and the AL champion Detroit Tigers. First pitch about 15 minutes away.

Barry Zito on the mound for the Giants.

It's a late afternoon start on the West Coast, so it will be interesting to see if early shadows on the field are a factor. If so, they could make it awfully tough for the Giants to catch up with Verlander's heat.

Gerry Davis is the plate umpire. Generally, the book on him is that he has a fairly tight strike zone. Tougher on pitchers.

That might make things more difficult for Zito. He throws a lot of soft stuff and may need to get a few calls around the corners.

With his team facing a left-hander, Tigers manager Jim Leyland moved second baseman Omar Infante up to No. 2 in the lineup and dropped catcher Alex Avila to eighth.

Safety Tips For Making Home Improvements On Your Ownwith me ...

Feng shui can be used to give your rooms a positive energy. This can make your home feel fresh and keep the air circulating in your home. This article provides information about improving your home with feng shui.

Don?t ever hire an unlicensed contractor. No matter where it is that you currently reside, all contractors are required to have some sort of certification from your state. While these requirements do not guarantee contractor competence, they are legally required. More than likely, if a contractor doesn?t have the right license, they also do not have the right insurance, meaning it?s risky to hire them.

Look for ?how-to? videos to get a preview of the project you want to undertake, and search based on specific model numbers. It may be surprising how many people had similar problems to yours and then recorded their solutions to help others. Once you take the time to watch their video, you can learn from their experiences.

It is crucial that you always change your air filters when needed. It makes it easier to breathe in your home and also helps with the air conditioning and heating. Most service calls that get repairmen out to homes are thanks to dirty filters building up crud in the machines.

It is not necessary to change your kitchen cabinets, nor is it necessary to spend a fortune to help freshen up the look of your kitchen. You would be amazed at how much of a difference a simple coat of paint can make. You can apply a number of nice finishes to cabinets. With a little online research, you can pick out a suitable, attractive finish option that you can apply on your own stylishly and affordably.

If you do not have a signed contract, your contractor should not begin work. You should consider having a friend or a lawyer look over your contract if possible. Your contract should contain specifics that pertain to all work being performed, costs, warranties and beginning and ending dates.

If you are thinking of replacing your cabinets, consider using wood cabinets. They are very strong and durable; usually able to withstand any use and abuse you can throw at them. Wood that is often used in cabinetry is maple, oak, or cherry. All such wood types are suitable for staining, so in the future if you decide to change up the color, this is easily accomplished.

Crown molding makes a huge difference to the appearance of your walls. The molding spices up plain walls to add interest so they are not so bland. Crown molding is an inexpensive but effective room project, and you can attend to the installation yourself.

When hiring contractors to perform any work in your home, always keep accurate and detailed records. You can?t assume your contractor will do this. Hang onto all of your project?s paperwork, from the initial contract to the final invoices. This will help both you and your contractor remain focused on the task at hand.

When you imagine your completed outdoor home improvement project, ask yourself if the changes you?re making will look out of place in the neighborhood. If your style won?t mesh well with nearby homes, do you really want your house to stand out in a way that may not be very appealing as a result? You need to consider if the changes you envision will stand out in a good way or just look strange in the surroundings.

Now you are much more prepared when it comes to home improvement. You may have thought yourself to be ready, look at yourself now! These tips should help you get motivated to make changes to your home.

Egypt transfers Qatari fuel for Gaza via Israel

24 Oct

?

by Ma?an News Agency in el-Arish, Egypt

23 October 2012

Egyptian authorities on Tuesday delivered eight tankers of Qatari fuel to Israel to be transferred to Gaza, a Palestinian official said.

Omar Hadhoud, Palestinian Authority representative at al-Auja crossing, told Ma?an that Israel will transfer the fuel to Gaza via the Kerem Shalom crossing.

The 450,000 litres of diesel donated by Qatar was scheduled to be pumped in limited quantities to Gaza on Sunday, a Gaza official said this week, but Egypt delayed the delivery to improve security coordination.

Delivery of Qatari fuel began in July, but was cut off after a border attack on Egyptian officers on 5 August.

LONDON (Reuters) - The European Commission said on Tuesday it was not proposing EU-wide legislation to regulate online gambling, preferring a cooperative approach to issues like preventing the fixing of sports matches and safeguarding children.

Online gambling is one of the big growth areas for bookmakers and more and more consumers are using mobile devices such as tablets or smartphones to bet during sports matches.

Revenues from online gambling were forecast to reach 13 billion euros ($16.8 billion) next year, a rise of 15 percent, the Commission said.

Setting out measures to protect consumers, the Commission said it will encourage cooperation between the EU's 27 member states to ensure children are not allowed to gamble online and other users are not drawn to rogue sites.

"Consumers, but more broadly all citizens, must be adequately protected, money laundering and fraud must be prevented, sport must be safeguarded against betting-related match-fixing and national rules must comply with EU law," Internal Market Commissioner Michel Barnier said.

Barnier said legislation was possible at a later point if cooperation did not prove effective.

"If the measures which we want to take together prove to be insufficient, the commission will propose more ambitious measures, including legislation," he told a news conference.

Major stock market-listed operators are wary of doing businesses in countries where regulations are not clearly defined. A number of them had to pay back taxes in Spain this year before they could take up new licenses in a lucrative market.

A trade body welcomed the plan but said the EU should act more quickly to address more than 30 complaints that companies had filed over the past four years relating to the way laws had been applied in member states.

"There has been no action since 2008 on a single complaint or infringement proceeding," said Clive Hawkswood, chief executive of the Remote Gambling Association, a body including leading betting companies Betfair, Paddy Power, William Hill and Ladbrokes.

5 Nonprofit Lessons from The Walking Dead | Inspiring Generosity

October 23rd, 2012 by joewaters

Rick Grimes, "The Walking Dead" (Photo via Gothic.net)

I?m a big fan of all-things zombie and especially the AMC series The Walking Dead. I have a lot of company as a record-breaking 3 million people joined me last week to watch the third season premiere. If you?re not familiar with the show it?s about a small group of survivors of a zombie apocalypse who must survive in a world turned upside down. They?re led by Rick Grimes, a small-town police sheriff who?s trying to save his wife, son, and the stragglers they?ve picked up along the way.

While you may not share my love for the semi-dead, you may agree with this: most of us are surrounded by these mute, will-less, dumb, sometimes evil, and dangerous brutes everyday.?The zombies stalking nonprofits are the people and situations they face daily that threaten their success or even their survival.

Scary stuff, for sure. Fortunately, my zombie-like interest in The Walking Dead has taught me a few lessons and tricks. Ignore them at your own risk!

Get In Shape

A lesson learned from The Walking Dead is that the weak, slow, or distracted quickly become zombie meat. Your cause too will meet a horrible end if you?re weak, out-dated, or poorly conditioned.

How to stay alive: Make a commitment to something new that will make a real difference to your cause and stick with it. It could be updating your technology, learning social media or?my personal favorite?giving cause marketing a try. The point is that you have to flex your muscles or someone else will have them for dinner.

Kill With Efficiency

The Walking Dead survivors have been on the run for two seasons. Not surprisingly they?ve gotten skilled at killing zombies with guns, knives, crossbows, metal poles, and anything else you could put through a zombie?s brain (the only sure way to kill one). Rick and his crew use what?s at hand to get the job done. So should you.

How to stay alive: Take a good look at all the things your nonprofit does. What are your bread and butter programs that work year after year. Can you enhance their success or replicate another success from them? When the nonprofit I last worked for figured out the formula for raising money from businesses, we didn?t stop, and we recruited 40 new corporate partners.

Beware of Small Spaces

People get eaten when they get trapped and have nowhere else to go. It?s a sad, gruesome way to die. And this could happen to you when you confine your nonprofit to one small area, whether it be grants, events, or individual gifts. Don?t limit yourself to one thing. Spread out and give yourself some room!

How to stay alive: Start exploring a direction for your nonprofit and set one new course before the end of the year.

You Need a Team

A lot of the characters on The Walking Dead don?t like each other, but that doesn?t stop them from sticking together. They know they?re stronger as a group and wouldn?t survive if they were alone. It takes a village. Even as a one person business, I have a team. Megan Strand is my cause marketing consigliere and co-author of a new book I?m writing. My webmaster Caitlin Dimare-Oliver fixes things when they break down so I can keep on fighting (and running). If I?m looking for new stuff to write about, Geoff Livingtson?s tweets always have something interesting. And for comic relief?after a long day of slaying zombies?I have my buddy and fellow blogger John Haydon.

How to stay alive: Look around at your team. Are they people you can rely on, or are they looking more like flesh-eaters that are sucking the life out of you? Replace them with vegetarians that you trust and respect and push you to survive and thrive.

Check the Back Seat

I can?t tell you how many times someone has gotten eaten on The Walking Dead because they didn?t look under a bed, or in a closet or behind a door. Such a senseless way to go! But you too are sacrificing yourself for ridiculous reasons.

How to stay alive: When it comes to the cause marketing work I specialize in, it?s important to focus as much on your partner?s success as your own. Know your assets and the value you bring to a partnership. Don?t show up to a business meeting with a 100-slide PowerPoint that no one wants to see.

I could go on and on, but what would you add to this list? How can nonprofits use their brains instead of being food for a zombie?

In Myanmar, only sickest HIV patients get drugs

YANGON, Myanmar (AP) ? Thein Aung has been trained not to show weakness, but he's convinced no soldier is strong enough for this.

He clenches his jaw and pauses, trying to will his chin to stop quivering and his eyes not to blink. But he's like a mountain that is crumbling. His shoulders shake, then collapse inward, and he suddenly seems small in the denim Wrangler shirt that's rolled up to his elbows and hanging loosely off his skinny arms. Big tears drip from his reddened eyes, and he looks away, ashamed.

As he sits outside a crowded clinic on the outskirts of Myanmar's biggest city, he knows his body is struggling to fight HIV, tuberculosis and diabetes ? but he can't help wishing he was sicker.

Although Aung is ill enough to qualify for HIV treatment in other poor countries, there are simply not enough pills in Myanmar. Only the sickest of the sick are lucky enough to go home with lifesaving medicine here. The others soon learn their fate is ultimately decided by the number of infection-fighting cells found inside the blood samples they give every three months.

The World Health Organization recommends treatment start when this all-important CD4 count drops to 350.

In Myanmar, it must fall below 150.

____

Antiretroviral therapy, in the past considered a miracle only available to HIV patients in the West, is no longer scarce in many of the poorest parts of the world. Pills are cheaper and easier to access, and HIV is not the same killer that once left thousands of orphaned children in sub-Saharan Africa.

But Myanmar, otherwise known as Burma, remains a special case. Kept in the dark for so many decades by its reclusive ruling junta, this country of 60 million did not reap the same international aid as other needy nations. Heavy economic sanctions levied by countries such as the United States, along with virtually nonexistent government health funding, left an empty hole for medicine and services. Today, Myanmar is among the hardest places to get HIV care, and health experts warn it will take years to prop up a broken health system hobbled by decades of neglect.

"Burma is like the work that I did in Africa in the'90s. It's 15, 20 years out of date," says Dr. Chris Beyrer, an HIV expert at Johns Hopkins University who has worked in Myanmar for years. "If you actually tried to treat AIDS, you'd have to say that everybody with every other condition is going to die unless there are more resources."

Of the estimated 240,000 people living with HIV, half are going without treatment. And some 18,000 people die from the disease every year, according to UNAIDS.

The problem worsened last year after the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria canceled a round of funding due to a lack of international donations. The money was expected to provide HIV drugs for 46,500 people.

But as Myanmar wows the world with its reforms, the U.S. and other nations are easing sanctions. The Global Fund recently urged Myanmar to apply for more assistance that would make up the shortfall and open the door for HIV drugs to reach more than 75 percent of those in need by the end of 2015. It would also fight tuberculosis, a major killer of HIV patients. TB in Myanmar is at nearly triple the global rate as multi-drug resistant forms of the disease surge.

The aid group Doctors Without Borders has tried to take up the slack by providing more than half the HIV drugs being distributed. But every day, physicians at its 23 clinics must make agonizing decisions to turn away patients like Aung, who are desperately ill but still do not qualify for medicine because their CD4 counts are too high.

"It's very difficult to see those kind of situations," says Kyaw Naing Htun, a young doctor with a K-pop hairstyle and seemingly endless energy, who manages the organization's busy clinic in Insein. He says about 100 patients who should be on drugs are turned away every month in Yangon alone. "It takes a lot more resources when they come back sicker. It's a lose-lose game."

____

Aung first learned about the virus living inside him in April. He had dropped weight and wasn't sleeping well, but figured it was the TB and diabetes running him down.

When the test came back positive for HIV, he was shocked and scared: How? Why?

"I wanted to commit suicide when I found out the results," he says softly, looking away. "What upset me most was my wife. She says I shouldn't die now because we have children."

The questions swarmed and consumed him, followed by a flood of worry and guilt that he had possibly infected his spouse. Then the bigger concern: What's next?

Unlike many living in a country closed off to the world for the past half century of military rule, Aung, an Army staff sergeant, had some firsthand knowledge about HIV.

He had watched the disease rot one soldier from the inside out, punishing him with a cruel death. But he also saw another get on treatment and live a normal life, despite the military kicking him out.

With the images of those two men locked in his head, Aung decided to fight to save himself and ultimately his family. No one but his wife could know, or he would lose his job and their home on the military base because of the deep fear and discrimination surrounding the disease. Drugs were his only chance to keep the secret.

"If I get the medicine, and I can stay in this life longer, I will serve the country more and my family will not be broken," he says. "My family is invaluable."

At the clinic in Insein, an area of Yangon better known for a notorious prison, Aung, who is using another name to protect his identity, waited nervously for the results of his first blood test.

CD4 count: 460. Low enough for drugs in the U.S., but well above the 150 cutoff in Myanmar. He was given TB medication and told to come back in three months.

____

Many of the 200 people crammed into the two small buildings of an HIV center just outside Yangon are simply waiting to die.

Beloved opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi visited patients there in November 2010, just days after being freed from house arrest, appealing to the world for more medicine. She also spoke passionately in July about the stigma of HIV via a video link to the International AIDS conference in Washington, saying, "Our people need to understand what HIV really is. We need to understand this is not something that we need to be afraid of."

There are no doctors or nurses stationed at the hospice supported by Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy party, forcing patients to care for each other. One man hangs a drip bag on a plastic string from the ceiling over an emaciated body. Other caregivers ? many of whom are also infected ? wave paper fans beside their loved ones for hours, providing the only relief they can offer.

Infected children whose parents have already died play barefoot in the stuffy, crowded rooms. Bodies, some nothing more than breathing corpses, are stacked side by side on bamboo slats above dirt floors.

Another room is packed with 20 women stretched out on straw mats crisscrossing the wooden floor. A young mother sobs in one corner as she breast-feeds a 7-day-old baby girl. She did not take HIV drugs until late in her pregnancy, and now must wait up to 18 months to know for sure whether her only child is infected.

"The funding is limited for the enormous number of patients," says newly elected parliament member Phyu Phyu Thin, who founded the center in 2002 and was jailed by the former government for her HIV work. "Waiting to get the medicine under the limits is too risky for many patients because they can only get it when their health is deteriorating."

____

Aung looks the part of a soldier with his shaved head and wiry build. He spent the first decade of his 27 years in the military fighting in domestic ethnic wars, away from his wife and two children.

It's this past life that devours him each night when sleep refuses to come. He served as a medic then, and regularly came into contact with the blood of wounded soldiers. He also had sex with other women. The question that haunts him most is, which one is to blame? He'll never know.

He takes sleeping pills every night to be released from these thoughts. But relief does not come, as chills and night sweats drench his body and the constant urge to urinate keeps him running to the toilet.

He's lost 10 pounds in the past month, dropping from 130 pounds to 120. His cheeks are starting to sink, and his eyes look hollow. His strength is also fading, and he can no longer lead grueling daily runs with the trainees. He uses his TB as an excuse, but he fears his superiors will not be fooled much longer.

"I try to hide it as much as I can, but some people have started rumors about me, so I try not to face them directly," he says. "I want to be strong like the other people. I'm trying, but now my body cannot follow my mind."

His wife refuses to be tested until Aung gets on the drugs. She worries if she comes back positive, her guilt-ravaged husband will kill himself.

"She doesn't want me to be depressed," he says. "If she is positive, I will be very, very depressed."

The disease has forced him to rethink who he is. He's killed people in combat, cheated on his wife and witnessed many horrors in his lifetime. But he wants a chance to make up for his wrongs.

As a Buddhist, he believes his disease is a punishment for misdeeds in a previous life. He vows to be a better man by helping others and giving what little he has to charity.

He says sicker patients deserve treatment first. Still, as he sits waiting for his second blood test, he can't help wishing his immune system was weak enough to help him reach the magic number.

But when the doctor reads his results, he knows he will leave empty-handed again.

CD4 count: 289. Still too high.

His only choice is to try again in three months, hoping he'll be sick enough then.

Estranged wife of suspected Wisconsin spa gunman among dead

MILWAUKEE (Reuters) - The estranged wife of the suspected gunman in a shooting rampage at a Milwaukee-area spa was among the three women killed, officials said on Monday.

Those killed in the Sunday morning shooting included Zina Haughton, 42, of Brown Deer, Wisconsin, who worked at the spa and was suspect Radcliffe Haughton's wife, officials said.

Radcliffe Haughton, 45, was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at the Azana Salon and Spa in suburban Brookfield hours after the shooting.

The other women killed were Cary Robuck, 35, of Racine, Wisconsin, and Maelyn M. Lind, 38, of Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, according to the Waukesha County Medical Examiner's office. Four people were wounded.

Haughton had been placed under a restraining order and directed to surrender his firearms to authorities this month in connection with a domestic abuse case involving his wife.

On October 8, the same date he was ordered to stay away from his wife after police said he slashed the tires on her car, Haughton posted to his Facebook page: "Need to get out of Wisconsin, HELP ..."

The next day, he issued a second plea: "can anyone help me get out of Wisconsin?"

That was the last posting to his page, which lists his marital status as "divorced."

An earlier posting, from October 3, the day before he is alleged to have slashed his wife's tires, said simply: "Shooting birds..."

"We believe this incident was domestic violence-related," Brookfield Police Chief Daniel Tushaus told a news conference on Sunday evening.

Haughton had a previous police record for domestic violence. He was cited for misdemeanor disorderly conduct, described as domestic abuse, stemming from an incident on January 8, 2011. That charge was dismissed on June 15, 2011, records show.

A spokesman for Froedtert Hospital said three of the four people wounded were in satisfactory condition, while one remained in critical condition. All four are women aged from 22 to 40.

The shooting was the second incident of gun violence at a U.S. beauty spa in a matter of days. On Thursday, a gunman opened fire at a salon in suburban Orlando, Florida, killing three women and wounding a fourth, his wife, before fleeing and committing suicide at a nearby residence. The suspect in that shooting had likewise been ordered to keep away from his spouse.

The last few months have been marked by a string of mass shootings in the United States. On September 27, a disgruntled former employee killed six people and took his own life in a shooting rampage at a Minneapolis sign company from which he had been fired.

In August, a mass shooting at a Sikh temple in Wisconsin claimed seven lives, including that of the gunman. In July, a gunman killed 12 people and wounded 58 in a shooting rampage at a Colorado movie theater.

Nationally, there were 458 workplace homicides in 2011 and 518 in 2010, according to U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data.

Chevy Chase rant: 'Community' star uses racial epithet on set

Chevy Chase rant: The actor went off on set of "Community" about the racist comments of his character on the TV show. In his rant, Chevy Chase reportedly asked if his character would say the "N-word" next.

By Molly Driscoll,?Staff Writer / October 22, 2012

Chevy Chase's rant on the set of 'Community' reportedly briefly stopped production, then Chase apologized to the show's cast and crew.

Chevy Chase reportedly shouted the N-word on the set of ?Community,? objecting to how his ?Community? character is portrayed as racist and asking if "Pierce Hawthorne" would say the n-word on the show next, according to TVLine.

The cause of the rant? Chase was reportedly complaining that his character has become more and more racially insensitive as the show has continued.

According to TVLine, production stopped briefly, then Chase apologized to the cast and crew.

Earlier this year, a voicemail that Chase left for former ?Community? creator Dan Harmon was leaked. At the show?s wrap party, Harmon had mentioned Chase walking off the set during production, and Chase later left an angry voicemail on Harmon?s phone insulting Harmon. ?I don't get talked to like that by anyone,? Chase said in the voicemail, according to the New York Daily News.

Because the history of the racial epithet Chase used is so loaded, the irony is of course that Chase was doubtless more offensive to people with his rant than his character has ever been on the show. Pierce is often portrayed as being clueless about pop culture and what is currently acceptable to say because of his age, once saying on the show, ?I do have a young African-American friend now? when referring to Donald Glover?s character "Troy Barnes."

Disagreement over whether it is ever acceptable to use the racial term that Chase employed has been going on in the entertainment industry for decades. Talk show mogul Oprah Winfrey called out rapper Jay-Z, who often uses the word in his songs, in a 2009 interview.

?I was once at a Jay-Z concert, and there was a moment when everybody ? including white people ? was screaming the N-word,? she told him. ?I got to tell you, it didn't make me feel good? but it didn't seem to affect you. You were having a good time up there onstage.?

"When I hear the N-word, I still think about every black man who was lynched?and the N word was the last thing he heard," said Oprah.

?It?s a generational thing,? Jay-Z replied. And in a video clip of the interview, Jay-Z added "We took the power out of the word. We took a word that was ugly and hateful and turned it into a term of endearment."

?Seinfeld? actor Michael Richards faced backlash in 2006 when he used the word and referenced lynching while performing at the Laugh Factory in California.

?I'm really busted up over this and I'm very, very sorry,? Richards later said during an appearance on ?Late Show with David Letterman.?

New Surveillance Tech Analyzes Shopper ... - Business Insider

We've covered surveillance tech that identifies faces and people under the influence, even an iPhone app that helps block potential spies, government or otherwise.

Now there's surveillance that could change the future of retail.

Bioscholar.com?reports that "Mirela Popa and colleagues at Delft University of Technology, Netherlands, are developing a software that can automatically categorise shoppers? behaviour using video footage from the fisheye cameras."

The CCTV cameras would be outfitted with a special algorithm in their software which logs and learns a shopper's behavior ? and a 'confused' shopper could become the target of floor personnel.

Popa told Bioscholar that more cameras at eye level, measuring customers' interactions with certain products.?

The military has been working on "Behavior Recognition Algorithms" for a while now.

Popa plans to deliver the findings of all the data she and her team gathers to the?International Conference on Image Processing in Florida this month. The Conference is sponsored by the?Institute for Electronics and Electronic Engineer's Signal Processing Society, which caters often to the needs of military and government agencies.

Rycroft has disc herniation, may be out of 'DWTS'

Adam Taylor / ABC

Melissa Rycroft and pro partner Tony Dovolani on "Dancing With the Stars."

By Anna Chan, TODAY

The "Bachelor" star Melissa Rycroft was rushed to the hospital Sunday after suffering an injury during practice for this week's performance shows for "Dancing With the Stars," and now, ABC has revealed her condition.

In a statement on Monday, the network said that Rycroft "was diagnosed with a disc herniation at the C4-C5 level of her cervical spine." ABC also noted that her "ability to perform in tonight's show will be a show-time decision."?

Her rep told E! Online that the reality personality has already been released from the hospital.

Sunday night, Rycroft's pro partner, Tony Dovolani expressed his worry on Twitter. "Really concerned about @MelissaRycroft..... we don't know if we are dancing tomorrow !!!!! Please keep us in your prayers #trouper," he wrote.?

Earlier Monday, Rycroft sent a message of her own via Twitter: "Thank you so much for sending your prayers.. still seeing and talking to docs this AM, will give more details soon, but thanks for your love!"

The reality personality was rehearsing for her team freestyle to Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe" for guilty pleasures week when the injury happened. In a video of the accident posted by People, Rycroft appears to cry out after swinging through Dovolani's legs. She was taken out of the ballroom on a stretcher and rushed to the hospital via ambulance.

In addition to her team dance with Shawn Johnson, Sabrina Bryan and Apolo Anton Ohno, she has a tango planned for the week's performances.

"Dancing With the Stars" airs Monday at 8 p.m. on ABC.

Which eliminated contestant -- if anyone -- should "Dancing" bring back IF Melissa can't perform this week? Share your thoughts on our Facebook page.

Apple Engineer On Leaks From China - Business Insider

iFeng

Tim Cook visits China

?

Apple's engineers are upset that the company's products keep leaking out early.

Ars Technica's Jacqui Cheng spoke with some of the rank and file employees. They are blaming Apple's global supply chain for all the leaks:

"You've got thousands of people working on manufacturing something who have no vested interest in keeping it secret," one employee said, adding that he believes leaks will continue to increase as Apple ramps up overseas manufacturing operations. "It will be increasingly hard to hide the industrial design we do because we manufacture things overseas. Since we don't do it in the US, it's may be hard to surprise people over anything in the future."

Among those we spoke with, people who consider themselves to be "troops on the ground" (generally those at the engineering level or below) get quite worked up about product leaks. "One of the great things about Apple secrecy is presenting something to the world, and then someone goes and ruins the fun for everyone," an employee told Ars. "It's really f**king rude to everyone who's worked so hard on it."

From an Apple employee's perspective, we bet it's frustrating. After all, the company has strict internal policies against leaking. To operate in a climate of fear only to see the secrets get out anyway has to be maddening.
